Should I use the Exsed sensor daily?

The more you use the sensor the more reliable general view you will get of your daily physical activity, sedentary behaviour and sleep. In addition, the more information about your activity is collected the more accurate will the comparison to the patients of diabetecs and cardiovascular deceases be.

Is the Exsed sensor water resistant?

The sensor is water resistent up to 30m. You may use it while swimming, but the intensity (light, moderate or vigorous) of that activity may not be accurately identified. Please do not wear the sensor at the sauna.

What if looks like no data is received from the sensor?

Remember to keep the bluetooth connection on all the time on the phone to ensure flawless data transfer form the Exsed device to Exsed application. If you in spite of that still witness some slowness on the data transfer try the following methods in that order.

Note also that if there is a large amount of activity data on the device, it might take a few sync to get it all to the application.

  1. Close and restart the bluetooth connection on the phone
  2. Close and restart the Exsed application
  3. If that did not help, restart your phone
  4. If the problem persists, remove the battery and insert it back. When inserting it back you should see red light blinking 3 times. If you don't see the 3 bilnks, replace the battery (CR2025)

How do I interpret activity?

Light activity is mainly slowly walking around. Even heavy exercise performed by the upper might be classified as light activity, due to minor motion affecting the sensor placed on waist. Still, light activity is better than no activity.

Finnish men aged between 25-64 performed light activity daily in 2011 by average of 3h27min, and women respectively 3h33min.

Moderate and vigorous activity is considered any activity that causes gasping and significant increase of the heart beat rate.

Finnish men aged between 25-64 performed this type of exercise on daily bases in 2011 by average of 51min and women respectively 44min.

Steps are accumulated by every type of activity performed by foot. Even most footwork done by bicycling accumulates steps.

Finnish men aged between 25-64 took on average 7248 steps daily in 2011, and women respectively

Suomalaiset 25-64 -vuotiaat miehet ottivat vuonna 2011 keskimäärin 7248 askelta päivässä ja naiset vastaavasti 7079 askelta päivässä.

The goals for mobile activity and steps proposed by Exsed are average figures of your age group of the population. You can adjust your goals in the settings that you can access by tapping the person figure in the upper right corner of the application.

How do I interpret inactivity?

With data collected by Exsed sensor we are able reliably detecting sitting/laying down, durations while standing and number of breaks in sitting.

The more daily sitting accumulates and the longer periods it consists, the more likely it is to cause health issues. This is especially true, if this substantial amount of sitting takes place both at work and spare time.

In Terveys 2011 study it was shown that number of just 20min continuous sitting sessions were related to poorer state of health compared to those sitting less. Finnish men aged between 25-64 spent time sitting by average of 7h26min daily, and women respectively 6h32min.

Sitting is considered interrupted when getting up from stationary sitting position lasts at least 10s on foot or one starts moving. A recommendation is that sitting should have breaks every 30 minutes or more frequently.

Energy consumption when standing one one feet is 1,5 time more compared to sitting. Having pauses in sitting by getting up or moving around recovers musculoskeletal system and activates controlling systems of metabolism.

Seisomisen energiankulutus on noin 1,5 kertainen istumiseen verrattuna. Istumisen tauottaminen seisomalla tai liikuskelulla elvyttää tuki- ja liikuntaelimistöä ja aktivoi aineenvaihdunnan säätelyjärjestelmiä. Finnish men aged between 25-64 spent time standing in 2011 on average of 2h35min daily, and women respectively 3h13min.

The daily goals provided by Exsed are average figures of your age group of the population. You can adjust your goals by tapping the human icon in the upper right corner of the application.

How do I interpret the sleep results?

The data produced by the sensor is considered as sleep only if it is attached to the wristband.

Sleep can be divided roughly in two categories: restless and restful sleep that follow one another during the sleep. The total duration of these restless and restful phases are collected and shown to the user by the application when the sensor is moved back to the clip attached to the waist.

An adult needs to sleep 7-9h on average daily of which restful sleep should cover 1/4.

How to change the battery on the sensor

Use CR2025 batteries on the Exsed sensor. To change the battery, open the back cover on the sensor with a coin or similar. If the battery is re-inserted right you should see a red light blinking once. Make also sure that you the red O-seal is at it's place before re-inserting the back cover.
